Benefits of Using Collagen
What is this collagen everyone is talking about? And what is it good for? Find out below as we discuss some of the many benefits of using collagen!
I’ve been a big fan of collagen for years now. When my family started eating the paleo diet back in 2015, we discovered it, and I’ve been adding it to our diet ever since.
More recently, I’ve seen collagen gaining popularity in the beauty industry, and it’s really taken off. People are raving over the benefits they see in their hair, skin, and nails, but the real benefits happen internally.
Simply put, collagen is the most plentiful protein in your body. It accounts for about 1/3 of the protein in your body, and provides structure for your bones, skin, ligaments, and muscles, among many other things.
Simply put, it’s what’s responsible for giving our skin it’s elasticity and hair its strength. It’s great for muscle and bone health, too.
As we age, we naturally produce less collagen. Lifestyle factors like poor diet and stress can affect our body’s ability to make this, too!
There was a time when that was less of a problem, because our diets provided a great supplement for this protein. It’s naturally found in high quality cuts of meat that contain bone or skin, but they’re not present in “muscle” meats.
Today’s culture has us trading traditional cooking methods for convenience, which means that we’re opting for boneless, skinless cuts of meat rather than their more nutrient dense counterparts. We’re also trading homemade bone broth for cartons we can buy at the store, which also limits our access to this important protein.
Luckily, there are ways to make up for that, which we’ll talk about in a bit, but for now, let’s look at some of the benefits of using collagen.

1. Improves skin health
Collagen is a major component of your skin. It’s what gives it its strength and elasticity. As we age, we naturally produce less of it, which leads to dry skin and wrinkles.
By taking a collagen supplement daily, we can counter some of that. Don’t waste time on beauty products that use collagen, though. The molecules are too big to be absorbed by the skin, so that’s just a marketing tactic. The real benefits come from taking a supplement internally.
2. Reduced pain and inflammation in the joints
Collagen is also important for maintaining your cartilage, ligaments, and tendons, which is what protects your joints. Again, as we age and slow down our production of collagen ourselves, our joints run the risk of increased inflammation and less stability. It’s how we end up stiff, swollen, and achy.
A daily collagen supplement can help counteract that and improve your overall joint health.
3. Healthy hair and nails
Everyone’s favorite collagen benefit is healthy hair and nails. That’s understandable, since those are visible benefits we can actually
Collagen supplements can help both your hair and nails grow stronger and healthier by preventing brittleness, so if you’re suffering from either, it’s time to give it a try!
4. Gut Health & Improved Digestion
Most of your immune system comes from your gut, which makes gut health and healthy digestion more important than we ever realized before.
The amino acids in collagen help promote a healthy gut and intestinal tract, which improves overall digestion. This is especially beneficial for anyone dealing with issues caused by a “leaky gut,” but is good to keep in mind for everyone.

Where to Buy Collagen
There are a few ways to get extra collagen into your diet. For one, I highly recommend
as a collagen supplement. However, not everyone wants to drink a cup of broth every day, and not every meal goes well with broth. Still, whenever possible, it’s a great addition to your diet.
But, another way we get our collagen is through collagen peptides powder. There are lots of different sources for this, but my personal favorite is from Thrive Market. It’s truly flavorless. I can even add it to black coffee without an issue! If you’re not already a member, you can
for up to $20 in shopping credits when signing up.

Benefits of Using Collagen: Final Thoughts
Collagen is all the rage these days, and for good reason. We’re all loving our longer, stronger hair and nails, and the more youthful appearance of our skin.
But, the benefits of collagen are much more than just skin deep. Whether you’re looking to improve your joint health, reduce inflammation, or help your digestion, a collagen supplement might be right for you.
