Easy DIY Makeup Brush Cleaner
This DIY makeup brush cleaner uses just 3 ingredients and cleans your brushes like new. Say goodbye to expensive, store-bought versions and toxic chemicals with this simple recipe!
We all know how important it is to clean our makeup brushes. Not only can they become a breeding ground for bacteria, but caky brushes can also irritate our skin, cause blemishes, and make it harder to apply our makeup.
Unfortunately, most of the products you can find at the store are either:
or, full of ingredients I don’t want anywhere near my skin
Don’t worry, though. I’ve got a simple, DIY makeup brush cleaner that only takes three ingredients and whips up in minutes. The best part? You probably already have everything you need on hand. Read on for the full recipe.
Why You Should Make DIY Makeup Brush Cleaner
We’ve talked before about
the unsavory chemicals in beauty products
, but you probably didn’t think about what might be in your cleaners.
Of course, you could always say, “I’m not applying makeup brush cleaner to my skin, so what does it matter?” But, here’s the thing. You’re using this product on your makeup brushes, which will then be used on your skin. There’s an extra step in there, but you’re still putting the ingredients from that cleaner on your face. I don’t know about you, but I want to be sure I’m putting only the
ingredients on my face.
Plus, while I’m all about paying higher prices for better quality, some of these bottles of makeup brush cleaner are being sold for over $10 a bottle. It might not seem like much, but when you consider that you need to clean your brushes weekly-ish, that price really adds up.
With this recipe, you’ll not only know
what’s in it, but it’ll also cost you about $1 to make.
That’s what I like to call a win-win.

This makeup brush cleaner really is the simplest one you’ll find. All you do is mix equal parts olive oil and castile soap in a glass bowl (I use 2 tbs of each), and put 2 drops each of lavender and tea tree essential oils.
Once you’ve got your cleaner mixed, simply swirl your brush in the bowl and then rinse it well. Repeat this until your brush is clean, and then lightly dry it on a soft towel and lay it out to dry completely. I like to clean my brushes in the afternoon and leave them overnight to dry.
Clean Your Makeup Brushes without the Toxins
