5 Ways to Destress After a Hard Day

School is officially back in session.  That means that all of the extra curricular activities and homework are back, too!  The lazy, carefree days of summer are a thing of the past, and this mama is officially wore out. Maybe it’s the fact that we dealt with a natural disaster in the first month of school and had to start over.  Or, maybe it’s the normal back-to-school stress. All I know is that lately I need a little more time to destress after a hard day.  I thought I’d share some of my favorite tips, in case you’re struggling, too!

How I Destress After a Hard Day

If you’re also struggling with the overwhelming responsibilities of motherhood, it’s really helpful to try and unwind after a hard day.  Taking a little time just for me helps set everything right again. Here are a few of my favorite ways to destress after a hard day.

Now, I wouldn’t call myself an actual yogi.  I’ve never even gone to an actual yoga class.  My entire practice has been done at home, watching videos from

. It works for me, though.  Eventually, I’d love to join a yoga class and meet some local friends who practice, but I’ve struggled with finding the time and the right location to do this.

I got into the practice of yoga about a year ago. It started as a way for me to stretch and strengthen my hip flexors and realign my spine after my youngest was born. Over time, it turned into my “me” time, and I couldn’t function without it.  For the longest time, yoga was part of my daily practice.

Last summer, I broke my elbow and couldn’t practice for several months.  I got out of the habit, and unfortunately, I’m still struggling to regain that time.

I do love it, and turn to it on stressful days, though. It is a great way to unwind in the evenings or take a few intentional moments for myself in the morning!

I take a long detox bath.

I have always been a huge fan of baths, and take one pretty much every night.  My bath time is my time to unwind, get some leisurely reading done, and enjoy a glass of wine. It’s what I do after everyone else in the house has gone to bed, so I don’t have to worry about interruptions from the kids, and no one needs me then.

I’ve recently started making my own bath salts, which makes bath time even more relaxing. You can see how I make mine

I spend some time writing.

Obviously, I love writing.  Even if you aren’t a blogger with a passion for writing, though, you can still destress after a hard day by getting your thoughts out on paper.

Sometimes I just need to do a brain dump, and other times I’m in the mood to write something really long and heartfelt.  Whatever it is, writing has always made me feel better.

This should be the first thing on my list!  We are always so tied to our phones, computers, and email.  It’s easy to see why we’re always so stressed out.  Especially as a work-at-home mom, sometimes the boundaries get really hazy and I find myself working when I should be enjoying family time. No matter how much you love your job, it can get stressful when it’s all consuming.

When I notice myself getting stressed out and overwhelmed, one of the first things I do is put away my phone and shut off my computer.  It’s like a virtual version of walking away.  Usually, I only need an hour and I start feeling better, but there have been times where I’ve stepped away for days when something big is going on.

If I ever disappear from social media, it’s probably because I got too stressed out!

Essential oils have made

a huge difference in my moods over the last few years.  The more I learn about each individual oil and how I can use it, the better I start to feel.  Some of the oils that I use to help me destress at the end of a long day are:

Those are my favorite oils for helping me destress, and I use them all in different ways.  For anyone new to essential oils, I recommend starting with Stress-Away, Lavender, or Frankincense, since they already come in your starter kit. If you don’t have one and want to get started,
