Never Say Never: Crunchy Things I Swore I’d Never Do
Ivy Lane Portraits
We’ve all heard the phrase “never say never.” Lately, I’ve been thinking about the life lessons I’ve learned that directly correlated with that phrase.
I mean, let’s face it. Even though we’re not supposed to, we
There are a lot of things I always swore I’d never do. But, guess what? I’m
totally doing them.
And, I feel like I’m way better off because of them. Each time it happens, I am reminded that I have no idea what the future holds. It’s like the universe telling me to always keep my mind open. Do you ever feel that way?
So, here’s a list of 5 crunchy things I swore I’d never,
Drink Black Coffee
I’m pretty sure I used to be more addicted to Coffeemate creamer than I was to the actual coffee. It took me a
time to wean myself off of it when I realized how bad it was for me. Even then, I still took my coffee with lots of cream and sugar.
remember mocking people that drank their coffee black. “I drink mine with cream, because I love myself,” I’d retort.
black coffee, now. The added benefit? I don’t have to worry about limiting it in an effort to lose weight!
Never. Never in a million years did I ever think I’d
homeschool my kids
. I always admired moms who “could” homeschool their kids. I just didn’t have the patience. Or the time.
And then, Addie asked me to homeschool her. I literally panicked. I didn’t know the first thing about homeschooling! Textbooks, and tests, and keeping track of everything we’d need to turn in stressed me
Luckily, I have some awesome friends who homeschool and they showed me how fun it actually is. (
homeschooling in Texas is awesome. All that stuff I worried about? Not necessary).
This year has been amazing so far. We’re all having so much fun. My kids are closer than they’ve ever been. We’re talking more. I watch my kids come alive as they pursue their interests. Life in general just has a totally different rhythm now than it has in the past. I kind of wish we’d always homeschooled. We’re all definitely much better for it.
It still cracks me up that we raise chickens in our back yard. Man. I grew up on a “hobby” farm and I hated collecting eggs. (Probably because my dad made me run out there and literally grab them while the hens were still sitting on them).
It’s been so fun, though. Chickens are something else. I had no idea that raising them in this setting basically turns them into pets. They come running when they see us. The kids can pick them up. Plus, who
want a pet that poops breakfast??
Cut Sugar from My Diet
We’ve eaten “clean” for years. When Addie was a baby, we cut out fast food and sodas, and gradually started reading labels. I never thought I’d go fully paleo, though. While I no longer consider us a paleo family (we eat some sprouted grains and dairy), we were for a long time.
One thing that managed to stick as we transitioned was that we pretty much kept the sugar out of our diet. Sure, we treat ourselves sometimes, but it’s not something we eat regularly.
much sugar, too. It’s hidden in everything, and when you eat it, your brain literally reacts as if you had drugs. There’s basically no way to just eat a “little bit” of sugar because it creates such strong cravings. All or nothing has been a much better decision for us.
Of course, we aren’t perfect, and sometimes we eat things we shouldn’t. Don’t take this as me preaching at you. Eliminating sugar 100% is
, but on a day to day basis, we do our very best to avoid it, and it’s improved our overall health tremendously.
The bottom line is, we don’t know what the future holds.
I’m getting better at keeping an open mind, but it takes practice. I wonder what I’ll be doing in another five years that’ll shock me! Let’s be honest. I’m sure I’ll be better off for it, whatever it is.
