Making Organization an Intentional Habit
Do you struggle with keeping your home organized, even when you are home all day?
It’s no secret that organization is really hard. As a creative, I really struggle with keeping my own areas clean on a daily basis, but I’m learning to make organization an intentional habit. Otherwise, I will find myself at the end of the day with a mountain of cleaning to do and no idea how it got that bad!
This year, one of my big goals is to be more intentional with my habits. That means that I’m trying to live my life more intentionally. More thought out. I have a purpose and a goal, and everything I do is geared towards those.
How to Set Goals You’ll Actually Accomplish
I’m Making Organization an Intentional Habit
I don’t actually like spending my entire Saturday cleaning and putting things away. The “flight of the bumblebee” when I have unexpected company is not something I am proud of. While I know that I can’t always have my house in Pinterest-perfect condition, it would be nice if it was at least not embarassing most of the time. So, I’ve put systems in place to organize our clutter. I purge unused “junk” monthly. My house has places built into it that are just made for organization, too. But somehow, I
end up overwhelmed by mess and clutter on a near daily basis.
I think creatives struggle with organization the most.
Do you agree? Think about it! You’re inspired, and you’re working on a project. You’ve got all of your materials out and you’re working like a mad-woman trying to finish before the motivation disappears. When you’re done, you’re so proud! But now, it’s time to move on to the next idea before you lose it. Or maybe your kids have been waiting patiently for lunch so you stop what you’re doing to feed them. Somewhere in there, you realize you need to start a load of laundry, and before you know it, you’ve moved on with your day. By the time evening rolls around, you take a look around and realize it looks like a hurricane blew through the house.
There’s a simple reason you’re failing at organization.
The answer to staying organized every day is actually really simple. Well, okay. There is definitely more to it, but if you have systems in place, you’ve purged unnecessary clutter, and you’re
struggling with organization, maybe there’s a simple solution. And it doesn’t involve adding more hours to your day.
Your Planner isn’t Helping You Get More Done
The one thing that most people tend to forget about during the day is to
finish every task before you start a new one.
I’ve talked before on the blog about how
multi-tasking can actually damage your productivity
, but it can also affect your organization! Studies show that the hardest part of a task is just starting. By stopping what you’re doing and coming back to it later, you are making yourself work twice as hard for the same result.
Some examples of finishing a task completely
If you’re not sure what I mean by this, or if you’re sitting there saying “But Angie! I do finish my tasks! This can’t apply to me!” then consider some of these examples:
Being sure to wash, dry, fold,
Getting all of the dishes cleaned, dry, and put away (including the hand-washables)
Collecting items for donation
actually bringing them to the drop-off
Completing your latest project
putting away all of your materials
Ah. If I didn’t catch you on the laundry one (Seriously, who does that??), I’m willing to bet I caught you on that last one for sure.
I struggle with finishing tasks all the time.
I spend most of my day cleaning up after other people and lecturing them on the importance of picking up after themselves. You’d think I’d be better at taking my own advice by now, but I still forget to put things away
the time. I walk away from a craft project the minute it’s done. Clothes sit in the dryer for days at a time because I got busy and forget to take care of them. I’ll sweep and then forget to mop, which is the
since it causes me to have to sweep again!
This is part of being intentional. Organization and cleaning up after
is not second nature, so I have to remind myself all the time to clean up after one task before moving on to the next.
If you’re still struggling with organization, try implementing this one simple tip this week and see how it goes. Does your house stay cleaner? Is organizing coming more naturally? Let me know in the comments below!

Hey Kendra! Thanks so much! I’m glad you liked it! I think when it comes to organization we all have our strengths and weaknesses. Like I said, my biggest weakness is LAUNDRY!

Finishing tasks is really the key. Sometimes I forgot about laundry in the dryer for DAYS. Opps.

Hey Jen! It really is! And don’t feel bad. Sometimes I forget mine in the washer. Maybe I should set an alarm or something!
