How to Overcome Perfectionism
I have a confession to make. It took a long time to realize it, but I’m a
perfectionist. I’ve been working on this for awhile now, and thought I’d share some of my tips on overcoming perfectionism.
How do you know if you’re a perfectionist?
I never really thought of myself as a perfectionist, but when I held myself up to this list, my eyes were opened. Here are some things that you might deal with if you are a perfectionist:
rarely content (always noticing flaws)
set unrealistic expectations
let failures and mistakes slow you down
define your life with phrases like “stressed out,” “overwhelmed,” and “worn down.”
comparison torments you
I don’t know about you, but I know this person
But the thing is, perfectionism robs you of the joy that you could be feeling. It keeps you from actually starting a project or chasing a dream, because you wait forever for it to be
I can’t even tell you how many projects I have had floating around in my brain that I never tackled. They weren’t perfect, so I just never started.
5 Ways to Destress After a Long Day
Which one of those ideas could have been
idea that helped me reach my goals? Well the truth of it is, I’ll never know, because I was too scared to start.
I’m working on overcoming perfectionism, so hopefully, my next big idea will be one that I actually try.
How I’m overcoming perfectionism.
I want to overcome perfectionism, because I know that it will help me thrive. Perfectionism makes me feel stressed out, overwhelmed, tired, frustrated, and like I’m not enough. No one is created to feel like that all the time.
If you’re like me and trying to fight against perfectionism, here are a few things I’ve found helpful for myself:
Focus on the big picture (vs. the nitty gritty details)
Celebrate every victory (no matter how big or small)
Stop comparing yourself to others
Focus only on what you can do (and not the things you can’t control)
Embrace your unique strengths
Use a journal to acknowledge your feelings
Always remember, you were not created to be perfect. No one is. Allow yourself to let go and embrace yourself just as you are. I’ll be right there with you on this journey.
