How to Create Buzz on Social Media This Fall

Learn how to create buzz on social media and get customers excited again with these fall marketing ideas.

The seasons are changing, and that’s always a great time to refresh your social media marketing plan. We’re coming off that summer slump and heading into what most businesses know as the busiest time of the year.

If you want to leverage the holiday season to boost your business,

is the time to start putting in the work.

I’ve got a few tips for you to up your social media game, refresh your marketing, and get your shop in tip-top shape for when customers come searching.

Clean up your Instagram

First things first, now is the time to put a little extra effort into your social media channels. I like to think of Instagram as the window into my business. It’s how I reach people to draw them in and make those connections, so it’s important that it tells the right story.

Now, I’m not really a social media expert,

, I’ve been an avid Instagram user for a good 10 years.

Here are some actionable tips to clean up your instagram:

account: You’ll get access to stats and more features that are geared towards businesses.

Write a clear and interesting bio: be sure to stand out! If you say what everyone else is saying, why would I follow you instead of someone else? Get creative and make your bio unique while still giving a clear picture of what I’ll find when I visit

Showcase only your

photos: Instagram is a visual platform, which means that in order to stand out, your photo has to catch my eye. If your photo doesn’t stand out, I won’t even stop long enough to read your caption. You don’t need to be a pro photographer to showcase good photos, though. Check out my post on how to take better Instagram photos with your phone for some tips!

Utilize Instagram Stories: I don’t know about you, but I spend the majority of my time on Instagram watching stories these days. Make the most of your stories by sharing content relevant to your brand and your why. I share videos of my kids and our homeschool day, cooking tips and recipes, inspirational quotes, natural living ideas, product unboxing videos, and really anything I think my readers will find helpful or inspiring in some way.

Use story highlights to put the most important info upfront: Now that I’ve been on Instagram for awhile, I notice that I get a lot of the same questions over and over. When I start noticing that, I make sure to do an Instagram story highlight so the information stays front and center all the time. Use these to answer questions and share the information that is most important to you and your brand. Highlights are those little circles you see when you visit someone’s profile, right above their pictures. See those circles above my photo grid in the picture below? Those are my highlights.

Make your Instagram a place you

to be: I noticed for awhile that Instagram was feeling like a chore. Early in my blogging days, I played all the social media and blogging games, including the follow for follow threads. Pro tip:

do that. I recently went through and unfollowed hundreds of accounts I didn’t recognize or relate to. Now my feed is full of accounts that inspire me in some way. How is your feed influencing you? If it’s not influencing you to create better content and do interesting things rather than sitting and scrolling for hours, maybe it’s time to re-evaluate who you’re following.

Use relevant hashtags: Hashtags are how you get found as a business on Instagram. Be sure you’re using hashtags relevant to your community and brand, and utilize them to their fullest extent. I like to find new hashtags by looking at the related hashtag feature at the top of a feed. For example, if I click on the hashtag #crunchymom, I’ll find lots of different hashtags that relate to that.

Here’s a great article

on how to find hashtags.

There are a ton of articles on how to optimize your Instagram account for your business. A couple I found really helpful are

Plan seasonal fall content ahead of time

Summer tends to be a slow time for most businesses, so it’s easy to get into a bit of a slump with our marketing and content creation.

If you’re not careful, that habit can be carried over to fall. We don’t want that, though, because

is the time to start gearing up for the holidays.

I’ve mentioned before on this blog that I really had no idea what I was doing when I started my first business. It’s something I kind of stumbled on and I learned one day at a time.

In those early days, I kept hearing how busy the holiday season would be. Seasoned sellers on Etsy were all abuzz about it. So, I sat back and waited for the sales to start rolling in.

Here’s a secret no one ever mentioned: It doesn’t happen that way.

For most of us, if you want a busy holiday season, you need to have a strategy and lay the groundwork months in advance.

August and September are a great time to sit down and plan out your seasonal content.

How to Plan Seasonal Marketing Content

If you’re not sure how to create buzz on social media this fall, the first thing you need to do is plan out some content. That way, you’re not leaving it all up to chance. I personally find myself more productive when I have an exact list of things to work on when I sit down at the computer, so having everything planned out helps me get more done in less time.

First, consider what your market is thinking about right now and as we head into the holidays

. For example, my market is mostly moms “in the trenches” of business, school, and extra-curricular activities.

I know that right now, they’re thinking about getting their kids back to school, school supplies, getting organized, and fall sports. Pretty soon, they’ll be making their Christmas lists, planning a Thanksgiving menu, and thinking about holiday bucket lists.

Then, prepare your content.

Get your pictures ready, research keywords (for blog posts) or hashtags (for social media), and get your content written. I like to do all of this in batches, because I find that it goes faster.

Once you’re done with that,

it’s time to get it all on the schedule

! There are a lot of popular schedulers out there, but I personally only use

to schedule out my own Pinterest pins. Otherwise, I find it best to actually be live

the platform as I post.

Instead, I keep a social media planner (as part of my

Inspired Business Bundle

) to track my posts. I also really love the app PLANN for Instagram. It helps you see what your pictures will look like in your grid, so you can keep a cohesive look.

Get a handle on your holiday marketing

It’s 90º + outside right now for most of us, so I know the holidays are the last thing on your mind.

We’re still planning beach trips and last minute summer vacations, right?

The holiday season doesn’t even officially launch until Black Friday, so it seems like there’s still plenty of time. That said, now is the time to be planning your holiday promotions and products. It could be argued that this is the single most important aspect of a successful holiday season.
