Getting Started with Young Living Essential Oils

Holistic Living Fails

Like so many people, I’m concerned with all of the “crap” we’re surrounding ourselves with every day. I like to say that we are the gatekeepers to our home. We decide what comes in, and what stays out.  My biggest focus is providing a healthy and safe environment for my family, and the last thing I want is a bunch of potential toxins lurking around.

I use essential oils in place of candles, air fresheners, and in DIY beauty products. My household cleaner is non toxic and plant-based. I even recently overhauled my makeup bag when I learned how many toxic chemicals are in conventional makeup. The FDA doesn’t really regulate that industry, and there are

many ingredients that affect our health, and I was just slathering them all over my body! If you haven’t looked up the ingredients in your makeup and skincare items, I hope you will. Really! Our skin is the largest organ on our body, and it absorbs everything we put on it, including toxins.

Still, I’m not perfect. While I consider myself “crunchy,” I don’t fully implement the lifestyle. It’s not about being 100% perfect. We’re human. So, let’s look at some of my holistic living fails.

1. Conventional Dishwasher Detergent Pods

I’d love to swap over to a greener dishwasher detergent eventually, but I just can’t find a store-bought dishwasher pod that has good ingredients! I’m always up for a good DIY, too, but I haven’t even found a DIY recipe that I love! It always seems that my dishes don’t truly get clean.  I personally am willing to battle through this with a little extra pre-washing until I find the perfect natural cleaner for the job, but my husband isn’t.  He keeps us fully stocked on dishwasher pods.

In the meantime, I’ll keep looking for the perfect recipe to make a natural version of pods.  I just really love the convenience of them!

(Side note, if you

the perfect recipe that actually gets your dishes clean and holds together, will you please share?)

Don’t get me wrong. I

my Thieves Household Cleaner, and use it for all of our basic cleaning. It does an amazing job as an all purpose cleaner, soft scrub, mop solution, and so much more.

And honestly? I really can’t stand bleach.  Eliminating bleach was one of the main reasons we switched to natural cleaners. For years, I didn’t even own it, but this year, I had to start buying it again. I only use it for the caulking in my bathroom, because I haven’t found anything else that keeps the mold away. It’s a fairly new bathroom (about 2 years old), but for some reason, we have recurring mold spots in the caulking. I know we’ll probably have to re-do the whole thing, but until then, I have to bleach it.

Don’t worry. I cringe every time I have to do it, and only do it every few months when I notice spots coming back. I want to limit that toxic exposure as much as I can!

Ok, I’ll be honest here.  I have no intention of getting rid of my Ibuprofen. I tried for a really short while when I first got into essential oils. I’d seen so many friends say they never needed medicine anymore, and thought I could do away with it.

The thing is, I get

hormonal headaches. For years now, it’s been a huge struggle.

They have certainly gotten

since turning to a more holistic life, but they’re not totally gone.  Now, instead of having a full blown migraine that lasts for days, I can pop one ibuprofen and feel better in an  hour. It’s all about balance for me, and if I need medicine to make my headache go away, I have no problem using it ocassionally.

I’m not perfect, ya’ll. None of us are. I do try to live a holistic lifestyle and keep most toxic chemicals out of my house. Sometimes, it’s just not possible, though. I do the best I can, but sometimes, we have to accept our holistic living fails!
