DIY Fizzy Bath Salts Recipe to Make at Home

Whether you’re a fan of bubble baths or epsom salts, this 3 ingredient fizzy bath salts recipe is the best of both worlds.

I don’t know about you, but I’m a huge fan of an evening epsom salt bath. It’s how I unwind after a day with the kids and a hectic work schedule. So, when my friend Melody asked me to come to her

and teach a few workshops centered around essential oils and self care, an epsom salt bath was a no brainer.

I wanted something a little more interesting than the basic recipe that everyone already knows, though. And, since I’ve been learning a lot more about essential oil safety, I’ve learned that you actually want an emulsifier .

So, I started brainstorming a safe, fun, and totally themed epsom salt bath recipe that these women would enjoy. The end result was a fizzy bath salt recipe that became such a success, and it was much simpler than I expected! Keep on reading for the full recipe and give them a try yourself!

First, a quick note on essential oils before we get started

are my go-to essential oils these days. Yep! If you’ve been around the blog awhile, you probably know I used to strongly recommend Young Living. Long story short, the expense, lack of public testing, and unsafe advice finally drove me away.

I used to think I was paying more for the quality, but it turns out, you can get the exact same (or better) quality for a fraction of the price. Plant Therapy has stringent quality control over their partner farms, a huge selection of clearly marked KidSafe oils, aromatherapists on staff, and they post their testing results publicly.

The best part is that you can go right to their website and order what you want from them instead of going through a rep. Just like ordering on Amazon!

Since I left Young Living and started researching essential oil safety advice from other sources, I’ve learned that I did a lot of things wrong for a long time. One of the things I used to do is dump a handful of epsom salts and a few drops of oil directly into my bath. Luckily, I never got hurt, but I’ve since learned that that isn’t a safe practice.

We all know oil and water don’t mix. I thought adding the Espsom Salts was enough, but it turns out that once those dissolve, they don’t bind to the oil. So, you still have oil just sitting in puddles in your bath.

Test to See if You Need an Emulsifier

If you want a visual, take a drop of Blue Tansy or another dark oil, drop it into some epsom salts, and them put those in a glass of water. Spoiler alert: once the salts dissolve, you’ll see little bubbles of color. That’s the oil

mixing with the water.

you need an emulsifier in your recipe

. This can be a variety of things, but for this recipe, we’re using an all natural, fragrance free bubble bath. Win-win! You get a safe epsom salt bath,

you get to enjoy some bubbles!

In your bowl, add your epsom salts and between 2-4 drops of essential oil, depending on how strong you want it.

Add in your bubble bath, starting with 1 tsp. Your salts should be fully coated in the bubble bath, but not totally saturated or swimming in it.

Mix well, and carefully spoon mixture into your jar. Give it a pretty label, and enjoy!
